Not all cleaning and sanitizing products eliminate germs and concerns about harsh chemicals at the same time. When it comes to the well-being of your students, faculty, and staff, you wouldn’t compromise – and the products you choose shouldn’t either.

The PURELL® brand is committed to developing uncompromising formulations that are effective against illness-causing germs, but gentle enough for people with allergies and other sensitivities to use regularly. We develop our formulations with high-quality ingredients, test them rigorously, and seek third-party certifications to prove it.

We’ve dedicated ourselves to increasing our manufacturing capabilities and shipping capacity, while investing in our commitment to protect public health – all with the goal of providing you the products and solutions you need to reopen with confidence.

Understanding Safe, Proper Use of Hand Sanitizers

As more hand sanitizers enter the market, the FDA has addressed growing concerns about the quality of many of these products. Recently, all hand sanitizer products from Mexico have been placed on a nationwide import alert because the FDA has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitizer products from Mexico that were labeled to contain ethanol, but tested positive for methanol contamination. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and life-threatening when ingested. Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient in hand sanitizer or other drugs.¹

In addition to the type and quality of the ingredients in your hand sanitizer, how you refill bottles and dispensers can have a tremendous impact on the efficacy and safety of the product. Topping off bottles and dispensers can have negative consequences, including:

    • Safety – Refilling bottles that aren’t meant to be refilled can mean hand sanitizer is diluted or contaminated, impacting its effectiveness and posing an issue with safety.
    • Quality – Mixing different products is not consistent with the quality experience that visitors expect, and the product may become watery or cause irritation due to incompatible formulas.
    • Efficacy – Topping off hand sanitizer can increase alcohol evaporation, which potentially reduces effectiveness. It can mean older or expired hand sanitizer remains in the bottle indefinitely.
