GOJO® Healthcare Connection
Symposium at the 2023 APIC Conference and Exposition
Interest in automated hand hygiene monitoring systems (AHHMS) as a tool to estimate hand hygiene performance rates and to help guide improvement efforts has slowly increased over the last decade. Recently, more hospitals are exploring AHHMS in response to the Leapfrog hand hygiene standards and the requisite human resources necessary to meet those standards. Further, the newly released Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America Hand Hygiene Compendium stresses the importance of using multiple methods to measure hand hygiene adherence.
While many infection preventionists (IPs) recognize the value of AHHMS, they struggle with making the business case to senior leadership for the financial investment and lack guidance for a successful implementation.

Using a human factors framework to assess clinician perceptions of and barriers to high reliability in hand hygiene
Existing studies of human factors engineering (HFE) in hand hygiene have examined how systems, the environment, cognitive factors, technology, and training affect hand hygiene compliance. In this study researchers used an HFE framework to identify perceptions of and barriers to high reliability in hand hygiene across different provider categories in a pediatric healthcare setting. While not widely used in infection prevention efforts, HFE has the potential to impact improvement at the individual, group and system levels.
